Supplies for Beginning Artists
I have a lot of people ask me, "What are some art supplies that a beginning artist should have?" Every artist is different, but generally what follows answers this question. Supplies for Drawing There is an endless amount of drawing materials available for artists. Therefore, choosing what supplies are relevant for the beginner can be overwhelming. It wouldn't be hard to find yourself with too many unless supplies, if you don't know what you're looking for. Because there are so many Drawing Supplies out there, I am going to sub-divide this category even further into "Black and White Drawing" and "Color Drawing"
Supplies for Black and White Drawing
- 3 or 4 quality soft Graphite Drawing pencils- I suggest 2B, 4B, and 6B. A regular #2(HB) pencil is also recommended.
- a sturdy sketchbook
- a pink pearl eraser, a vinyl eraser, and a kneaded eraser
- a blending stump or two
- high quality drawing paper of at least 11″ by 14″
- Vine charcoal
- Compressed charcoal (black)
Supplies for Drawing in Color
- High quality Colored Pencils- pay more for a high quality. If price becomes an issue, buy a pack that contains less colors. There is a huge difference in quality among colored pencil manufacturers.
- Colored drawing paper- If you can't decide what colors to get, start out with "grays".
- Chalk pastels
- Oil Pastels
- Blending stumps
Supplies for Watercolor Painting
- A pan of watercolor cakes (High Quality) or
- A set of watercolor tubes-primary colors plus Paynes Gray (dark gray), Indigo blue, and Burnt Umber (brown)
- Nylon or Sable Brushes
- a Watercolor pad of paper
- a plastic mixing tray (palette)
Supplies for Acrylic Painting
- A set of primary tubes of paint plus White and Burnt Umber
- Nylon brushes
- a Plastic mixing tray or palette
- Assortment of stretched canvas or canvas board
- Table Top easel
- A set of primary tubes of oil paint plus Titanium White, Paynes Gray, and Burnt Umber
- a small bottle of linseed oil
- small glass bottles or jars
- Bristle brushes and sable brushes
- a disposable palette pad
- Odorless mineral spirits
- Rags
- Assortment of stretched canvas or canvas boards
Supplies for Sculpture
- Assortment of polymer clay colors
- Mexican Air Dry clay
- Sculpture wire
All of these supplies can be purchased at the local art store or any online retailer.
