One of the most important skills to master in Adobe Photoshop is how to clone. The more tools you learn to use, the better your cloning will be. You can choose from the Patch tool, Healing Brush, or the Spot Healing Brush. Even more tools are available, like Content Aware and Vanishing Point. Let's take a look at these in some detail, now that I have brought them to your attention.
Not knowing when to use the correct tools can cause poor results. If you have never tried anything but the clone stamp, you are really missing out. Taking the time to learn them, will yeild some excellent results.
If you are new to Adobe Photoshop for a long time, you should learn how to use each of the tools can benefit you. By experimenting, you will see which tools work best, and in what situation. You should be watching new, and updated Photoshop CS5 tutorials. Photoshop CS5 has new functionality, that older versions just don't have, so you should be watching the newest tutorials.
Clone Stamp Tool - The Clone Stamp, or Rubber Stamp Tool, was the first cloning tool introduced. Mostly, this is because you, the retoucher, are inn complete control. It takes years to truly master the art. However, there is little this tool can not do.
Spot Healing Brush - The Spot Healing Brush Tool can remove dirt from a picture. This brush will create sample from the pixels around it, mixing the color and texture. This brush is simply amazing on areas, like gradients. If you happen to be next to a color change, you will definitely start picking up unwanted textures.
Healing Brush - The Healing Brush tool is another tool that allows you to remove unwanted dust. This tool allows allows you to select your own area that you want to sample from. Photoshop will then blend the sampled areas together.
Patch Tool - The Patch Tool corrects the image using a sampled area. This is a combination of the Lasso and the Healing Brush. By keeping the color and texture behind, this tool does an amazing job.
Content Aware Fill - The Content Aware Fill is about modifying areas, with Photoshop's artificial intelligence. Since this tool is automated, you have limited control over the results.
Vanishing Point - The Vanishing Point Filter is used to clone in perspective. This tool allows you to clone along a grid. It works by cloning on a dimensional plane, and works very well for architectural changes.
Even if you know how to use one or two of these Adobe Photoshop Cloning Tools, you are really missing the big picture. These tools all have strengths and weaknesses. To become a skilled retoucher, you really need to learn how to use them all.
